London Victorian Townhouse 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 8)

Our Victorian town house is located in the heart of London at the crossroads between historic Bloomsbury and trendy Clerkenwell. It’s perfect for a family or a group of friends looking to explore London from a very central base.

You’ll find excellent transport links nearby. Our local tube/train stops are Russell Square, Angel, and Kings Cross/St Pancras – all about 12 minutes walk away. And St Pancras, of course, has the Eurostar rail link to continental Europe. With Paris a little over two hours away, our home could be the base for some amazing excursions. But if you want to keep it local, you’ll find a useful bike hire docking station across the street and lots of taxis on the Kings Cross Road.

In this quiet neighbourhood, you are in the centre of things but tucked away from the crowds. The British Museum, for instance, is only a 15 minute walk away. London’s West End, with its fabulous shopping (Oxford St, Regent St and Covent Garden), theatres, art galleries and landmarks (Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and Big Ben) are all within walking distance (20-25 minutes walk).

Heading East, you can stroll around the City of London, Europe’s financial centre with St Paul’s Cathedral, the Gherkin and the Tower of London. To the South (30 minutes walk or a short bus ride) you’ll find the London Eye, Tate Modern and South Bank.

Let’s move on to the house itself. This light-filled, 1600 ft2, comfortable and stylish Victorian townhouse was built in about 1870 and extends over 3 floors.

Coming up a flight of steps from street level, the first floor has an airy reception room opening onto the kitchen. At the front, generous windows in the Victorian bay offer a perfect spot for morning coffee and sunshine. At the rear, we come into the fully fitted kitchen, with a vintage table and chairs for dining. Beyond, we go through french doors which open onto the hardwood deck which is a summer afternoon suntrap.

Carrying on up the building we come across a spacious family bathroom on the half-landing. This has a cast iron, claw-foot tub, separate shower enclosure, basin and loo, all in Art Deco style. Concealed in a cupboard we find a washing machine and clothes dryer, and a boiler which keeps the house very cosy in winter and provides plenty of hot water.

The second floor has a two rooms. The bedroom in the rear has an antique pine sleigh bed, lots of cupboarding and a large sash window with views of the deck below. Entering the front room, we see a gorgeous, large, light filled space, with three shuttered sash windows, and an original stone fireplace. This room can be set up as a fourth bedroom (giving a total sleeping capacity of 8 people) or as a relaxing, sophisticated reception room, away from the activity of the kitchen and ground floor. (It all depends on your requirements – just let me know what you need).

Next up is the roof terrace – a beautiful outdoor space for a glass of wine on a summers’ evening, with scented jasmine plants.

The third floor has a smaller bedroom at the top of the stairs – this is perfect for children or for adults who just need somewhere to sleep. The top floor also enjoys one of the best parts of the house – the master suite. Entering the bedroom we see an antique carved wood bed and other hand-picked items of vintage furniture. A dressing area links the bedroom and the en-suite bathroom. This Art Deco styled en-suite bathroom is spacious and enjoys good light.

Our home has all the modern and high-quality fittings and equipment you could possibly expect – wi-fi, cable TV, pay-as-you-go mobile phones, digital piano, Bosch washing machine and dryer, copious bed-linens and towels, a fully equipped kitchen, a trusted cleaning/maid service (at extra cost), and on the spot help from myself or my local personal representative (in case of problems).

If you have children I know from personal experience that having some extra equipment when travelling can be a huge help. We have a cot and high chair but if there’s anything else you need just let me know. There are two fantastic playparks less than 10 minutes walk away, many attractions perfect for children (the Transport Museum, Museum of London, etc.) and many toys and games provided in the house.
